John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s songwriting partnership is the stuff of legend. And it turns out the pair used music as their very own psychiatrist back in the early days of The Beatles. Speaking with Radio 6 Music, the 78-year-old was asked by Matt Everitt about music being a form of healing.

Matt pointed out: “Sometimes it’s not about the destination you know, the destination is the journey.

“Writing it and recording it is the thing – that’s the point of it, not necessarily the end single or whatever.”

Sir Paul admitted that was true and how much he loves it.

He said: “I always say to people I’d do it for a hobby if they sacked me.”

His new lockdown album even features an Elvis Presley Easter Egg.

It turns out the double bass he uses was owned by Bill Black, who played the instrument in The King’s original trio.

Additionally, the 78-year-old plays his own iconic Hofner violin bass and a mellotron from The Beatles’ recordings at Abbey Road Studios.

Sir Paul hadn’t planned on releasing an album in 2020, but the lockdown gave him an excuse.

On McCartney III’s inception, Sir Paul said how he was living lockdown life on his farm with his family when he would pop into his studio every day.

The 78-year-old said: “I had to do a little bit of work on some film music and that turned into the opening track and then when it was done I thought what will I do next? I had some stuff I’d worked on over the years but sometimes time would run out and it would be left half-finished so I started thinking about what I had.

“Each day I’d start recording with the instrument I wrote the song on and then gradually layer it all up, it was a lot of fun. It was about making music for yourself rather than making music that has to do a job. So, I just did stuff I fancied doing. I had no idea this would end up as an album.”

McCartney III will be released December 11, 2020 on Capitol Records across digital platforms, on CD, and on LP manufactured by Third Man Pressing and can be pre-ordered here.
