PlayStation Plus and Xbox Games with Gold subscribers can download a new batch of free games for January 2021.

The first batch of Games with Gold releases are available from January 1, followed by a second wave on January 16.

PS Plus subscribers, on the other hand, can download free PS5 and PS4 games on the morning of January 5.

The PlayStation Plus line-up includes Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Greedfall for PS4, as well as Maneater for PS5.

Over on Xbox Games with Gold, subscribers can download Little Nightmares, Dead Rising (remastered), King of Fighters XIII and Breakdown.

With the new games about to be released, now is the perfect time to PS Plus against Xbox Games With Gold for January 2021.

Can Sony continue its dominance in 2021, or will Microsoft get things off to a bang with Games with Gold?

Check out the battle between PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold below…

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third game in Square Enix’s rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy. The action shifts to South America, where Lara Croft explores the jungle in a bid to save the world from certain doom.

“Fight, explore, craft and survive amid the dense and perilous jungles of South America in Lara Croft’s biggest adventure to date as you race to save the world from a Maya apocalypse.

“Gather resources and master the unforgiving terrain. Outgunned and outnumbered, you need to use your surroundings to your advantage; strike from the shadows and use mud to camouflage your presence. Use advanced traversal techniques to reach long-forgotten tombs and negotiate deadly puzzles.”

Greedfall, meanwhile, is an action RPG with a fantasy twist: “In this stunning action RPG, explore uncharted new lands as you set foot on a remote island seeping with magic, and filled with riches, lost secrets, and fantastic creatures.

“You’ll have complete freedom to shape your abilities, spells and skills and decide whether to complete objectives with combat, diplomacy, deception, or stealth. Forge this new world’s destiny, as you befriend or betray companions and entire factions.”

PS5 users can download and play Maneater, which is a unique action game in which players take control of a shark.

Over on Xbox, Games with Gold subscribers can download four games spanning three console generations over the course of the month.

It all begins with Xbox One horror game Little Nightmares, and Xbox 360 brawler King of Fighters XIII on January 1, followed by Dead Rising and Breakdown on January 16.

“In this remastered version of the original game, survive the flesh-hungry undead mob in the Willamette shopping centre using a range of weapons at your disposal,” reads the official Dead Rising description.

“As photojournalist Frank West, you’ll have 72 hours to fight off the zombie horde and discover the reason behind the outbreak.”

Little Nightmares, meanwhile, is a creepy 2D platform game with some fantastic puzzles and lots of disturbing enemies.

“Help your character, Six, survive The Maw: a massive and mysterious vessel inhabited by corrupted souls looking to make you their next meal.

“Reconnect with your inner childhood and unleash your imagination to escape the horrors within and find salvation.”

Picking a winner is difficult, because all of the games offer vastly different experiences. There’s horror, action, brawling and, er, sharks, so it really comes down to personal tastes.

If you’re judging things purely by Metacritic, then Xbox probably scores a victory overall.

Little Nightmares has a Metacritic score of 78%, Dead Rising scores 85%, while Breakdown and King of Fighters have scores of 71% and 79%.

Over on PlayStation, Maneater scores just 68%, compared to 72% for Greedfall and 75% for Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Personally, I’m more excited about the PlayStation games, but mainly because I haven’t played Greedfall or Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

However, I do think Xbox wins it overall, so Microsoft scores the first victory of 2021.
