Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Hamilton.

The weather agency says they’re tracking a storm that’s capable of producing very strong wind gusts, nickel-sized hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms extending in a line from near Brantford to the Hamilton and Burlington areas may produce wind gusts up to 100 km/h and torrential downpours, dropping rainfall amounts of 50 millimetres or more in under an hour, warned Environment Canada.

Total local rainfall amounts near 100 millimetres are possible.

The line of storms is expected to move slowly southeast and out of the area by mid-afternoon.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that people take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
